@mason Software developers focus on all aspects of the development of computer programs, including brainstorming ideas, coding and other programming tasks, testing designs and deployment. Software developers also maintain software by fixing bugs and creating and deploying upgrades. For example, a software developer might design mobile apps from start to finish, create databases or work on networks and servers.

According to the German data analytics company Statista, more than 400,000 people in the United Kingdom used the career titles of programmer and software developer between 2011 and 2020. The company's data came from a project conducted during those years that had more than 35 million respondents.

Yet, as with other areas of the world, the UK is experiencing labor problems that include a software developer shortage. The number of jobs for software developers is vastly higher than normal with tens of thousands of openings. A simple job title search through only one employment search site, Indeed, in July 2022 revealed nearly 30,000 openings. Employment experts believe these types of numbers will increase as humanity becomes more dependent on computers over time.

Available positions on commonly used job sites include software developer or a specific experience level (i.e. apprentice, trainee, entry-level, junior, senior and graduate), IT and software developer, front end developer, software tester, test engineer, software engineering, developer analyst and development consultant. Some employers only offer developer positions based on a worker's knowledge and skills related to a specific type of software. Scheduling and other options include on-site, remote or work from home, part-time, full-time and flexible.

Some experts believe that Brexit combined with disruptions caused by the pandemic and changes to how workers view employment helped create a market oversaturated with openings. For now, the market has more employers with openings than skilled workers to fill their positions. Many skilled software developers actively seeking new employment aren't willing to accept lower salaries or on-site jobs. As a result, employers must find ways to attract and incentivize available high-quality candidates.

As an AI language model, I do not have access to the latest statistics, but according to a published report by Tech Nation, "the UK tech sector comprises 1.7 million jobs and is worth nearly £184bn ($263bn), with software engineers being the single largest group of employees in the tech sector."
